A former project team led by Prof. Xie has won 2013 R&D 100 award for “Shape memory polymer based smart reversible adhesive systems”. This award is widely considered the "Oscars of Innovation", and it recognizes and celebrates the top 100 technology products of the year. In 2013, we are one of the eight materials science technologies to win this award.
Successful adhesive bonding needs to meet two requirements: sufficient interfacial contact and favorable molecular interactions. Traditional adhesives rely on solidification (curing) of liquid adhesive or evaporation of solvent to achieve bonding. For such adhesives, the flowability of the liquid is critical to ensure molecular contact at the bonding interface. In contract, the smart dry adhesives we have developed utilize the solid-state shape changing capability of shape memory polymer to achieve interfacial contact with the bonding substrate, thus involving no liquid. The adhesive strength exhibited by our smart dry adhesive is one order magnitude higher than what is reported in the literature. More importantly, it possesses a unique built-in detachment mechanism (through the recovery of the shape memory polymer) that is unavailable for any other dry adhesive. Owing to its superior performance, this technology has attracted attention from industries and won “2011 Innovations that Could Change the Way You Manufacture” award by Society of Manufacturing Engineers.
